Helping our students stay safe and make responsible choices on the Internet is of great importance to the Bainbridge Island School District, and Internet safety can be promoted at home. The following resources will help students and their families develop Internet Safety practices and Digital Citizenship behaviors.

Digital Citizenship relates to the way in which individuals communicate and present themselves on the Internet, and the identity users develop through interactions on the Internet and social networking sites. School-based activities and discussion about Digital Citizenship include awareness and resources related to Internet Safety and cyberbullying prevention and response. The Bainbridge Island School District includes instruction in Digital Citizenship at appropriate grade levels as students access the Internet at school.

Australian Government: Hector's World - Student Home

The Australian Government eSafety Commissioner has created animated video resources that parents can share with their elementary school aged students. Students will follow story characters, “Hector and his sea creature friends,” as they learn about safe online practices. 

Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA)

COPPA regulates what information websites can collect from children under the age of 13 and how that information may be used. The Federal Trade Commission's Bureau of Consumer Protections provides online guides for parents and businesses about compliance with COPPA.

Common Sense Media – Parent Tips and FAQs

Common Sense Media is dedicated to improving the lives of kids and families by providing the trustworthy information, education, and independent voice they need to thrive in a world of media and technology. The site includes information about safe Internet use, content filtering, and digital citizenship as well as recommendations about media-entertainment including TV, movies, games, apps, and even, books.

ConnectSafely

ConnectSafely offers resources for anyone engaged in and interested in the impact of social media and mobile technology The site includes free download-able parent guides for social media. Each guide addresses the features of social media and provides tips for instructing children on the safe use of social media and digital devices.

GCF Global: Teaching Kids About Internet Safety

This tutorial by Goodwill Community Foundation Global is designed for any parent or guardian who wants to learn how to keep their kids safe online. The tutorial includes tips, recommended guidelines and links to other internet safety resources.

Federal Trade Commisions site dedicated to understanding online privacy, how to protect your devices from hackers and threats, and how to avoid common online scams.

Washington State – OSPI Cyberbullying and Digital/Internet Safety

The Internet offers a wealth of resources and material for education. Accessed through a variety of electronic devices, it also allows for rich and diverse opportunities for 21st century communications. These devices are becoming ever more diverse and ubiquitous. They raise issues of digital / Internet safety and digital citizenship. Along with ensuring that our young people have the technological skills to effectively use digital devices, platforms, and resources for educational purposes, we also have the responsibility to teach them how to be safe and productive digital citizens of the 21st century.

Washington State Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction provides information and resources for Media Literacy and Digital Citizenship. The skills associated with Media Literacy lead students to think critically and curiously about the messages they consume, create, and engage with through a variety of forms of communication.
